After spending four years in prison, Said Mahran emerges determined to seek revenge. Yet the world he once knew has changed drastically — the 1952 Revolution has transformed the social and political landscape. On a personal level, his life has fallen apart: his former wife Nabawiyya has married his onetime apprentice and right-hand man, Ilish, and together they have denied him access to his daughter Sanaʾ. Meanwhile, his former mentor and revolutionary idol Rauf ʿAlwan has joined the ranks of the elite, abandoning his old ideals and slogans. Said sets out to achieve justice in his own way, but his pursuit turns him into a fugitive consumed by hatred — so much so that he fails to recognize his final chance for love and redemption when it appears. The novel was first published in 1961, and was quickly adapted for the screen in 1962 under the title The Thief and the Dogs.
