كعادته يدخلنا  موراكامي في أجواء غرائبية. وبقدر ما هي غرائبية فإنها بسيطة تحتفل بسحر الحياة وتدافع عنها، وذلك من خلال حكايتين متوازيتين متقاطعتين. حكاية عجوز يبحث عن نصف ظله الضائع. وفتى في الخامسة عشرة هارب من لعنة أبيه السوداء. وبينهما عوالم ومدن وشخصيات ورحلات شبه ملحمية تدور جميعها حول البحث عن الحب. ومعنى الموت. وقيمة الذكريات. رواية تدفع كل واحد منا إلى تأمل الحياة. وبدء رحلة البحث عن بوصلته الضائعة.  

في سبيل التاج هي مأساه شعرية تمثيلية وصفها المؤلف عام 1895، وهي رواية أخلاقية بطلها فتى "قسطنطين"، تعارضت نفسه عاطفتان قويتان حب الأسرة وحب الوطن، فضحى بالأولى فداء للثانية، ثم ضحى حياته فداء لشرف الأسرة المتمثل في والده الخائن "برانكومير"، ويدور في الأجزاء الأخيرة الصراع بين زوجة والده الأميرة "بازيليد" وبين الفتى "قسطنطين"، لقد تجلت في هذه المأساه عبقرية الشاعر ومواهبه الكبيرة، فالأسلوب سهل ممتع، والأفكار متسلسلة متماسكة، والوقائع جلية وواضحة، وأخلاق أشخاص الرواية تفسّرها أقوالهم وحركاتهم…
