How do we learn? What is memory? How do we know how to behave? تَتجلَّى الواقعية النقدية عند «نجيب محفوظ» في هذه الرواية، كما أنها تُعد البداية في الفلسفة العبثية التي قدَّمَها في العديد من أعماله التالية؛ فهي من ناحيةٍ انعكاسٌ للواقع المجتمعي الذي لا يقف عند نقطة الرصد، بل يَتجاوزها إلى النظرة النقدية لهذا الواقع، ومن ناحيةٍ أخرى تُثير العديدَ من الأسئلة حول عبثيةِ الحياة التي يَحياها بطلُ الرواية «سعيد مهران»، ومُحاوَلتِه خلْقَ قيمةٍ لهذه الحياة، لكنه يفشل في كل مرة، وهو ما يجعله يستسلم في النهاية لمصيره مُعلِنًا اليأس، وعدم جدوى البقاء أو المقاوَمة في هذا العالم الذي أصبح مَرتعًا للكلاب أمثال صاحبه «عليش» وزوجته «نبوية» والصحفي «رءوف». كما لا تخلو الرواية من إسقاطاتٍ متعدِّدة حول الواقع السياسي والاجتماعي الذي عاشَته مصر بعد ثورة يوليو ١٩٥٢م، والآمال التي كانت مُعلَّقة عليها، والحال التي وصلت إليها.

«وصل إلى القاهرة قبل وصول الحملة الفرنسية بأيام، وكان في الإسكندرية من أُسرةِ عطَّارين، ولمَّا انتشر الوباء أهلَك أفرادَها، فلم يُبْقِ على رجلٍ أو امرأةٍ سواه. وكَرِه البلد فقرَّر ويَمَّم شطرَ القاهرة. وكان معه شيءٌ من المال، وميزةٌ نادرة في ذلك الزمان وهي أنه يعرف القراءة والكتابة، لُقِّنها في المعهد الديني قبل أن ينقطع عنه ليُعاون أباه في العطارة، وتَحيَّر في القاهرة فترةً حتى وجد مَأواه في بيتٍ بالغورية، كما وجد عملًا كخازنٍ في وكالة الورَّاق. كان شابًّا قويَّ الجسم غامقَ السُّمرة واضحَ الملامح.»
