“أرى أطيافًا… زوجي يعتبرني مجنونة، ماذا عنك.. هل تصدقني؟” في هذه الرواية تخرج نهى داود عن المألوف في كتاباتها الواقعية لتقدم للقارئ خلطة شيقة تمزج فيها الواقع بالخيال. بطلة الرواية هي “صفاء” القاطنة بالعقار 47 والتي عانت مع الاكتئاب المرضي لسنوات وتكافح للتعافي من أجل زوجها وأبنائها. تقع صفاء على خاصية جهنمية تمكنها من كشف المستور. وما أن تبدأ باستخدامها محمومة حتى تقع جريمة مروعة في الشقة المقابلة لتفترش الأرض بالدماء. فهل تنجح صفاء في استخدام خاصية “الأطياف” للكشف عن غموض الحادث؟

تزوجت "نجية" منذ خمسة عشر عاما ثم لم تر زوجها سوى ليلة الزفاف. ولكن هذا ليس موضوعنا الآن، فعند قدميها جثة يجب التخلص منها سريعا، وتاجر الأعضاء لا يبدي التعاون المعتاد.

تَتجلَّى الواقعية النقدية عند «نجيب محفوظ» في هذه الرواية، كما أنها تُعد البداية في الفلسفة العبثية التي قدَّمَها في العديد من أعماله التالية؛ فهي من ناحيةٍ انعكاسٌ للواقع المجتمعي الذي لا يقف عند نقطة الرصد، بل يَتجاوزها إلى النظرة النقدية لهذا الواقع، ومن ناحيةٍ أخرى تُثير العديدَ من الأسئلة حول عبثيةِ الحياة التي يَحياها بطلُ الرواية «سعيد مهران»، ومُحاوَلتِه خلْقَ قيمةٍ لهذه الحياة، لكنه يفشل في كل مرة، وهو ما يجعله يستسلم في النهاية لمصيره مُعلِنًا اليأس، وعدم جدوى البقاء أو المقاوَمة في هذا العالم الذي أصبح مَرتعًا للكلاب أمثال صاحبه «عليش» وزوجته «نبوية» والصحفي «رءوف». كما لا تخلو الرواية من إسقاطاتٍ متعدِّدة حول الواقع السياسي والاجتماعي الذي عاشَته مصر بعد ثورة يوليو ١٩٥٢م، والآمال التي كانت مُعلَّقة عليها، والحال التي وصلت إليها.
