خالد فهمي درس الاقتصاد والعلوم السياسية بالجامعة الأمريكية في القاهرة، قبل أن ينال الدكتوراه في التاريخ عام 1993 من جامعة أوكسفورد. عمل في جامعتي برنستون ثم نيويورك أستاذًا مساعدًا ثم مشاركًا لتاريخ وعلوم الشرق الأوسط، وهو الآن رئيس قسم التاريخ بالجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة. أصدر خالد فهمي العديد من الأبحاث والمقالات المهمة، بالإضافة إلى عدد من الكتب التي صاغت رؤية جديدة في دراسة التاريخ المصري الحديث على رأسها كتابه هذا، وكتاب «الجسد والحداثة» عن تاريخ الطب والقانون في مصر الحديثة
