يستولد عنوان هذا الكتاب تساؤلات في ذهن القارئ: لماذا تأويل التاريخ العربي وليس تأويل التاريخ الإسلامي أو تأويل التاريخ العربي والإسلامي؟ وما المقصود بالعرب؟ هل يعني بهم الباحث المجموعة العرقية الناطقة بالعربية اليوم أم مختلف الشعوب التي عرفت الثقافة العربية الإسلامية على مرّ التاريخ؟ لقد بدا التاريخ مشغلاً مركزياً عند كثير من المفكرين العرب ولكن معالجة المسألة التاريخية توزعت بين العديد من زوايا النظر، فهناك المعالجة التراثية التي أساسها التجديد والدفاع عن التراث سواء بتوجه إسلامي أو بتوجه عروبي، وهناك من يلوذ بالمعالجة الابستيمولوجية، وهناك من يعتمد مقولات ذات مرجعية فكرية محددة مثل القراءة الماركسية، وهناك أعمال نحت منحى السرد الوقائعي للتاريخ، وأعمال أخرى حاولت التوفيق بين السرد والتحليل. الا أن الباحث لاحظ أن الخطاب في أعمال المفكرين المغاربة المعاصرين ينزع نحو ربط السرد بالتحليل وربط التحليل بالفهم ولا سيما عند ثلة منهم، ورأى بأنهم أقرب الى معنى التأويل من غيرهم، من هنا عمد الباحث الى الاجتهاد وفي تدبر نصوصهم لتكون منطلقاً الى تأويل التاريخ العربي. فهل نزع هؤلاء المفكرون الى استحضار التاريخ الحدثي؟ أم أنهم قاموا بصياغة تاريخ تحليلي؟ أما أنهم عمدوا الى ربط هذا
