إن أجاثا كريستي، التي تُعدّ بحق أفضل روائية كتبت عن الجرائم، وصلت إلى مستوى لا تتعداه إلاّ فيما ندر، وذلك على حد وصف أحد النقاد، لكن عاماً بعد عام وكتاباً بعد الآخر، تزداد عبقريتها وتتطور قدراتها كروائية ويصبح ذكاؤها أكثر إتقاداً. وبهذه القصة التي تُعدّ من روائع القصص البوليسية التي كتبتها أجاثا كريستي، نجد أجاثا تضع بصمتها في تاريخ القصص البوليسية. إن فكرة القصص لا تقل روعة عن طريقة حبكها، فالقاتل في هذه القصة شخص مهووس يرتكب جرائمه وفق الترتيب الأبجدي لأسماء ضحاياه، حيث يبدأ بالحرف "إيه" ليقتل السيدة "آشر" في "أندوفر"، ثم الحرف "بى" فيقتل السيدة "بيتى برنارد" على شاطئ بيكسهيل، أما الحرف "سى" فيكون ضحيته السيد "كارمايكل كلارك" من "تشترستون" وعلامة على طريقته كان القاتل يترك بجانب الجثة دليل قطارات أبجدياً مفتوحاً على اسم المكان الذي حدثت فيه جريم القتل؟ فإلى أي مدى سيصل هذا المجرم في الحروف الأبجدية؟. لقد ارتكب جرائم كثيرة حتى كان يبدو أن أحداً لن يتمكن من القبض عليه، لكنه ارتكب خطأ، وهو الخطأ الذي يرتكبه كل المجرمين - عندما تحدى بدافع من غروره الخالص قدرة السيد بوارو على إحباط خططه. إذا نصحت زملاءك بقراءة هذه القصة، فلا تلمِّح لهم بشيء من شأنه أن يُفقدهم متعة قراءتها.

«فسدت شهيتي أنا الذي كنت أرى في الطعام ما بعد الطعام. لا يوجد ما هو أشهى من طعام استقر لفترة داخل فخارة في النار، تمامًا كالتجارب التي تسوي جاذبية الواحد على مهل. الفاكهة التي أعود بها من السوق لا ضامن لها، وهي غدَّارة مثل اختيارات الواحد العاطفية. الخبز يقول إنه لا بد من شريك. يكبر الواحد فيهرب من أهله، مثلما يسقط اللحم الناضج عن عظم مفصل الفخذ الذي لولاه ما تشكَّل وتماسك. الطريقة التي يظل الفطاطري يفرد بها عجينته ويلمها هي نفسها الطريقة التي يتعامل بها الواحد مع هلاوسه وإحباطاته في الساعة التي تسبق النوم. الصلصة شخص لا يعيش لنفسه، لكن للآخرين. حشو البيتزا فقط هو الذي يصنع الفروق، لكن جرِّب أن تحبس بشرًا مختلفين في خوف مشترك أو في غناء جماعي، سيسقط الحشو ساعتها، وستكتشف أن العجينة واحدة».

في هذه الرواية يكتشف عمر طاهر متعة استخدام الطعام والرائحة لكتابة قصة حياة رجل عادي. المراهقة الحب الغربة الوحدة الزواج الأصدقاء النجاح والفشل… هناك دائمًا طعم ورائحة كما يحكي بطل الرواية.
