بدأت القصة في قرية صغيرة تدعى “الجساسة”، حين ولد طفلًا لم يكن عاديًا أبدًا، فهو لم يخرج من رحم والدته باكيًا، مثل بقية المواليد بل خرج صامتًا، يُقلب بصره في الأشياء مندهشاً، كما لو أنه تفاجأ بوجود كوكب آخر، غير الكوكب المظلم الضيق الذي كان يعيش فيه.

انها بضع ساعات في يوم ما… ما الذي يمكن أن يحدث؟؟.. الآن يمر الوقت ولا ندري أي شيء عنه… فجأة نجد الساعة تشير إلى الخامسة… ثم ننظر بعدها إلى الساعة نجدها الواحدة صباحًا… إذا ماذا يمكن أن يحدث في رواية .. تتحدث عن بضع ساعات؟؟!! سؤال سألته لنفسي.. وحتى الآن لم أجد إجابة عنه.. فلماذا لا نبحث عن الإجابة معًا؟

"أولاد حارتنا" تُعد إحدى أشهر رواياته وكانت إحدى المؤلفات التي تم التنويه بها عند منحه جائزة نوبل، أثارت الرواية جدلاً واسعًا منذ نشرها مسلسلة في صفحات جريدة الأهرام 1959، وصدرت لأول مرة في كتاب عن دار الآداب ببيروت عام 1962، ولم يتم نشرها في مصر حتى أواخر عام 2006. وكانت رواية أولاد حارتنا هي السبب في محاولة اغتيال نجيب محفوظ وتحديدًا في عام 1994، بعد يوم من ذكرى الجائزة - تعرض للهجوم والطعن في رقبته من قبل اثنين من المتطرفين خارج منزله في القاهرة، ونجا منه، لكنه عانى من عواقبه حتى وفاته في عام 2006. تتتبع الرواية عائلة الجبلاوي، الذي يعيش في بيته الكبير المحاط بالحدائق والأسوار العالية ومن حوله أبناؤه وأحفاده الذين يتنازعون على الوقف، فيما يسيطر الفتوات على الحارة ويحولون بين أبناء الجبلاوي وبين جنته الأرضية، وبرغم فقرهم والظلم الذي يتعرضون إليه لا يفقدون الأمل في خروج الجبلاوي من عزلته لتوزيع تركته وتخليصهم من بطش الفتوات.
