«بين القصرين» هو الجزء الأول من ثُلاثيَّة «نجيب محفوظ»، التي جمع فيها بين التأريخَين السياسي والاجتماعي، من خلال سردِ حياةِ أسرةٍ مصرية متوسطة؛ هي أسرة «السيد أحمد عبد الجواد»، بدايةً من نهايات العقد الثاني من القرن العشرين حتَّى منتصف أربعينياته، وراح يُبرِز فيها الأبعادَ النفسية والاجتماعية لكل شخصيةٍ بإتقانٍ فريد. وتدور أحداثُ الثلاثية في حي الجمالية، الذي سُمِّي هذا الجزء على اسم أحد شوارعه، وهو شارع «بين القصرين». وفي هذا الجزء يَسرُد «محفوظ» الحياةَ اليومية للأسرة، والتناقُضات المتناغِمة التي شكَّلتها الظروف الاجتماعية وغذَّتها التركيبة النفسية، والدورَ الذي تلعبه كلُّ شخصية، وخاصَّة شخصيةَ «السيد أحمد عبد الجواد» العَصِية على التصنيف؛ لكثرةِ ما تَتضمَّنه من تناقُضات. وتبدأ أحداث الرواية بإيقاعٍ هادئٍ يرتفع تدريجيًّا حتى يصل إلى مَداه مع أحداثِ ثورة ١٩١٩م، واستشهادِ «فهمي» الابنِ الثاني للأسرة.
