حلم واحد كان يلاحق مكرم؛ الأستاذ في جامعة هارفارد، أن يلتقي كل عرب المهجر في موضع واحد. كان يحلم بدولة واحدة يجتمع فيها العرب بعدما تشتتوا في العالم، هناك لن يضطهدهم أحد ولن يخيفهم أحد. سوف تكون دولة قوية لأنها ستمزج بين ما تعلموه في كل الحضارات.

بأسلوبه المتفرد، يصطحبنا د. أحمد خالد توفيق في روايته الجديدة ” شآبيب” إلى رحلة ممتعة مليئة بالإثارة من النرويج إلى الولايات المتحدة، مرورا بليبيريا ومصر وأستراليا، قبل أن يستقر عند خط الاستواء. يطرح العديد من الأفكار الجريئة ليظل السؤال: هل يمكن لرجل واحد أن يُصلح العالم، حتى لو كان يؤمن بأنه الشخص المناسب الذي جاء في الزمن المناسب ليقوم بالمهمة المناسبة؟

تنتقل الرواية ما بين القاهرة وفيينا والمكسيك؛ لنرى زمنًا وأمكنة ونسق حياة مغايرًا لم يعد له وجود في حياتنا المعاصرة.

يختار المؤلف استخدام شخصيات رواية "البيضاء" الشهيرة التي نشرها يوسف إدريس في نهاية الخمسينيات، فيبعثها للحياة من جديد ولكن في أحداث تمزج بين الواقع والخيال، فيفاجئنا وجود أسماء حقيقية لسياسيين وفنانين مصريين وعرب وعالميين. ولعل الاكتشاف الأكبر هو قصة حب وزواج "يحيى مصطفى طه"؛ ذلك الاسم الذي اختاره لنفسه يوسف إدريس في "البيضاء".

تنبعث قصة "يحيى ورُوث" عبر صوتيْهما على صفحات الرواية. صراعًا بين ثقافتيْن مختلفتيْن، وطموحيْن مشروعيْن، وجانبيْن من المشاعر. حب وغيرة وطموح وفن. أجواء سياسية قلقة في مصر، ومأساة تعصف بعائلة "رُوث" في المكسيك. كل هذا في إطار عامَي 1953 و 1954 بأجوائهما: الصراع بين الديمقراطية والدكتاتورية، والاختيار بين حرية الصحافة ومصادرة الرأي الآخر، وحيرة المثقفين المتوزعين بين التأييد والمعارضة. هي بحق رواية عن الثورة والمستقبل العالم الذي كان.
